How long should we use a wifi router?

Postby lightning18 » 08 Aug 2015, 11:07

Do you think there is a limit when using a wifi router? I just noticed that back when I first bought my wifi router, I can connect from it even from downstairs (my wifi is in the second floor of my house) but lately, I have noticed that I get disconnected even when no one is using the computer upstairs. What do you think? Do you think I should replace my wifi router? :?:

In 2 years I have replaced my wifi router 3 times. This thing still happens, I don't know why. Try to buy a new one. ;)

you may need to update something in your router ive read about that I think its called firmware. check with the people that installed your router or look on the router for webpage info to see if you can log into it yourself. but if that doesn't work you may need to have it replaced it could be wearing down like all machines do over time.

I haven't had issues with the router here in the dorm. We are using it for 3 years now. You can powercylce it from time to time. Unplug the switch and wait a couple of minutes before re-plugging the switch. Let me know if this helps.

My broadband provider gives me a new router free every few years on the condition that I stay with them. This is good for me as I'm perfectly happy with them and have no intention of leaving right now.

My router connects only to the current, ie, I can take it to any part of the house. However, I sense that sometimes does not work very well ... I have to restart almost every day ... :(

If you use the router for more than 4 to 5 hours at a stretch then it is better to switch it off for some time say 10 to 15 minutes to extend the life of the modems.

Loosing the connection to the wi-fi router can have several causes. Does it happen just with you pc or do you have any other device with the same problem? If it is just your pc does it happens near the router too? If so then check malware on you pc.

On the other hand if it happens with several devices then check if you didn't buy anything to the house that can cause interference, try to change the wi-fi band on the router to one less used, like from 11 to 8 for instance, it will depend which one are your neighbors using. Try also to update the drivers on the you pc :).

Maybe. Even gadgets have expirations but when it disconnects it has a factory problem. You should let it be fixed. It should not be giving that kind of service in the first place.

I use to do tech support when I worked at my previous call center job. It was for an internet, cable telephone provider in Canada. Sometimes I would have customers calling in with router issues. We had a modem/router combo. We also would have to ask customers if anything changed. Most routers use a 2.5GHz band. So if they added a baby monitor to the room, cordless phones, micro ovens, etc sometimes that can actually cause interference.

Another thing is that there is control channels. We had a browse option to see how many people in the area were on the same channel. The common ones are 1,6,11. Sometimes we could switch to another channel and it would work well. From our end we could upgrade the customers firmware but it didn't always work. If you haven't power cycled in a long time sometimes a simple unplugging the modem and router for 20 seconds will do the trick.

Me and my boyfriend have been using the same Wi Fi router for about 4 years now it occasionally bonks out but does work well and we both game as well.

Check the literature of your wifi router because there might be a setting there that trips the power for a given duration. Our wifi router here at home and in the office are never turned off.
