Pop Don't Be Ashamed For Being Frugal When It Comes To Food

Postby Spontaneo » 19 Jan 2023, 15:16

Are YOU too snooty for expired food? I’m not.

With the cost of groceries going sky-high, maybe you should reconsider.

Let me give you three (3) personal examples.

My roommates and I eat a lot of peanut butter sandwiches and lunch meat sandwiches.

Example #1 Our neighbor has a friend who gives her day-old breads and sweets once a month. Our neighbor sorts through what groceries that she wants than gives we roommates the rest. I place some in the pantry and some in the freezer for future use. The breads and sweets always come in handy and are perfectly edible, everything from whole wheat bread to mini bagels to ciabatta! Perfect for sandwiches!

Example #2 A friend gives we roommates boxes of chips, peanut butter-filled pretzel bites, tortilla chips, etc., quite frequently that her husband gets from his place of work. He gets them for free and he is kind enough to give them away. Perfect for sandwiches! Who cares if the treats are a little outdated?

Example #3 Sandwiches are frugal! You cannot pass up peanut butter. Too boring? Toast the bread in a toaster first! I usually do. Then, I know that there are a lot of lunch meats that cost way too much, even many types of bologna. Purchase “meat bologna”. I can find such bologna for $3.99 a pound at my local grocery store deli. Toast the bread first with a little mayonnaise! Perfect for sandwiches!

These are just a few examples to tell you that there is nothing to be ashamed of for being frugal when it comes to groceries, especially outdated groceries. You know that day-old bread? Toast it, lather some mayonnaise then place a few pieces of meat bologna on it and grab some chips! Lunch or dinner is taken care of! Almost for pennies! You get the idea, right?

Oooops! I almost forgot drinks! Soft drinks are not required for your meals. Save a lot of money and buy yourself an off-brand box of tea bags and make some iced tea! I know that Southern sweet tea is the best, but pretend that you are in a nice restaurant ordering unsweetened iced tea. Want lemon? Whoa… fresh are way too expensive. Go to the produce section and grab one of those small lemon squeeze bottles for a $1.00!

Have yourself a frugal day!

I may not agree with you, for example, but what you eat is your business, yes?

At times, my concern in my family is to avoid food wastage.
Often this is interpreted in different ways.
Sometimes, I am being told why to try finishing a less tastier meal?
Why do you try to finish up such an old meal?
And I say that unless something is rotten, we can always have it.
So why not try to avoid wastage.
And I think being frugal in anything is not a crime, not something to be ashamed of.
But yes, one cannot argue about everything with others.
So let go off certain things at times!

There is nothing wrong with eating left overs ,expired dry foods or a day old bread. My hubby would put them in the fridge, toast them before consume. Problem is, my stomach is sensitive to overnight or expired food, often had diarrhea last for 1 week.

If you have a sensitive stomach regarding outdated food, then that is a different story.

I like liver, I started to eat it when I had iron deficiency and despite it having a very strong flavor I like it, I use lemon and vinegar to marinate it and then I grill or fry it. nothing wrong with that.

I agree, there is nothing wrong with day old bread. You can also freeze bread to toast later if you aren't using it fast enough to avoid it going stale. There is a difference between "best before" and "expiry" dates. If something is past it's best before date it's still safe to eat, just possibly not as tasty. Expiry dates sometimes you have to be a bit more careful with.

Yes, quite often I do freeze the bread.

For the past 2 days, I was at a friend's place.

I like to take food with me.

I took some burgers out of the freezer and some donated burger buns out of the freezer. Voila!

Some expired foods if they have gone bad would give a peculiar smell.
Also one needs to take care to keep cooked foods like vegetables in the Fridge at the right time, especially during the summers.
If left unattended, hey might rote easily.
And many a times, food more than 3-4 days older is likely to go bad.

If you know that the food is going to expire in a few days, place in the freezer until you really need.

Such food comes out of the freezer fresh!

Today, our neighbor brought over various day old breads. She doees this once a month.

I placed half in the freezer and half in rhe cupboard.

The roommates do not like such day old breads, but I am grateful and appreciate tremendously.

Do any of you know of this cookbook?

Years ago, I owned a copy of a Richard Simmons cookbook.

I am stupid when it comes to cooking potato salad and would rather keep the potato skin on. With other potato dishes, I keep the skin on. For example, Crock-Pot German Potato Salad with Kielbasa.

In his cookbook, he wrote about his Grandmother's Potato Salad and how she left the potato skin on.

I cannot find this cookbook anywhere. I do not know the title. I cannot find the cookbook on my bookshelf or at the library or online.

Do you know anything about it?

Thank you!

When it comes to food, a bad smell is present when they go bad. By smelling it, you are able to tell and avoid.

You probably all know by now how I get day-old breads given to me every month.

Recently, I was browsing through a library cookbook and found a very frugal recipe for bread!

It's really easy!

Toast bread and tear into pieces then place in a bowl.
Throw in some vegetables.
Pour salad dressing over.

Voila! A bread bowl!

I hope that you like it! ;) ;)

I cannot wait until the end of the month! The local food pantries are going to be here with day-old food!

One person's trash is another person's treasure!

Do you ever receive day-old food?

Yeah, some people would be. Personally I think if you're going to eat an animal it makes sense to use all of it, including the offal. I don't eat meat any more, but when I did I ate sausages and haggis which are made with organ meat and blood.

Why not? I'm not saying that you should (I don't eat it either), just wondering why? Do you consider it unhealthy, or is it because you think deer are cute, or some other reason?
