I don't think there is a best version of Windows for gaming. The one exception to that is when you're trying to play older games. If you are trying to play older games, it might be best to use XP or something even older like 98 or 2000.

I suppose this is generally true because for example, Fallout 3 works perfectly on XP & Vista yet somehow Windows 7,8 and 10 break it. In terms in everything else? They surely keep getting better.

Although at one point, Windows XP was the best OS for gaming in some opinions purely because it had highest capability with most games.

If you are looking for the best game performance, first you have to look for the best hardware, by that I mean an excellent graphics card, a powerful processor and more than enough memory. These will make the biggest difference when running games.
Now about the operating system let me say that the big gaming component of Windows is DirectX that set of APIs sitting between OS and hardware. With Win XP you are limited to running DX9 games but that is more than enough for most games and XP will give you the best performance comparing with other operating systems.

With Win 7 you can enjoy the full spectacle of DX10 and 11 and this will be the best of all Microsoft SOs for gaming. Between Windows 8 and Windows 7 I don't recall any game that requires Windows 8, so I would go for Win 7 once again.

Windows Vista is out of the question, so is Windows 10 for now.

Mainly if your game demands DirectX 10 or 11 choose Windows 7 otherwise Windows XP will do just fine, although Microsoft doesn't support it anymore.

A link to a legal version of Windows 7 wouldn't do much good. You would need a key to install it.
