Becoming a Hollywood actor during the silent film era was easier

Postby Netherrealmer » 08 Oct 2020, 13:47

Becoming a Hollywood actor in the silent film era is much more easier. First the number of actors are minimal so the rivals to get a role is much more easier. You don't even need to be fluent in English since the movies are silent and only uses subtitles. Most Hollywood actors during the Silent film era are Europeans and because there is no audio, their accents wont be a hindrance.

Before Hollywood became racist in 1930s (interracial kisses were illegal and white people play Asian roles)

There is a Japanese actor who get romantic roles during the silent Era.

Since the movies during those times have no voice, Accent is not a hindrance.

There is no lip synch at all. You can have a thick croatian accent and it wont matter

Well, to be fair, silent movie subtitles are different from the subtitles we have now . Since, you know, most silent movie actors do not really talk on their movies.

With the likes of Trump in power, Hollywood may slide back into such retrogressive policies.
I hope Trump is succeeded by a progressive liberal president.

I would like to go back and watch one such silent movie. Is there any available online?
Being silent would have definitely required better acting skills as one has to convey using facial expressions and body gestures. That is not an easy task. Using words while acting is much more easier.

Well, majority of silent films are public domain since they're like hundreds of years old. So you can watch them for free at YouTube. Although, some of them might be seen as offensive in modern times.

Lol made sense, now there are a lot of things to consider, especially with issues of skin color and the likes affecting so many movies now. Being cast in the wrong movies or as the wrong character can completely damage your career.

People still make some silent movies but those are mostly experimental. I guess Gen Z would be boring just watch. It would be to slow for theri brain.

Yes. Gen Zs have been programmed to interact with content that excites many of their senses.
Blame the entry of internet and allied devices in almost every sphere of life.

We had Charlie Chaplin and shows like Laurel and Hardy where silence and gestures could speak loud and entertain. Gen Z didn't have that privilege to experience. That's sad.
