Serving Others

Postby Spontaneo » 02 Nov 2022, 05:39

When serving others, one does not have to be religious. Just do what is right. I am by no means a genius, but I have noticed that when I do serve others, I feel loved and appreciated.

Here are a few tips:

Hold the door

Being a girl, I even hold the door! I even hold the door for men.

Return the shopping cart

This is something nice to do for grocery store employees, especially during the winter season.

Drive someone lacking transportation

Does someone need to go to church? The grocery store? The bank? To work?

Buy a meal

My loved ones mostly had homemade meals, but they would treat me to breakfast sometimes, lunch sometimes and dinner sometimes. They did not know, but I would order the cheapest items on the menu!

Buy a gift card

One of my roommates loves for Santa and Mrs. Santa to give her Wal-Mart gift cards for Christmas!

Clean a house/mow their lawn/shovel their snow

When I lived with my family, there was a couple not far away that I was fond of. I would polish their house and mow their lawn. The Mrs. would give me a lemonade and root beer floats. The Mr. would give me a $20 bill and would tell me to go buy a new dress.

Teach a skill

I wish that I would have been taught how to cook and bake. I had to teach myself.

Give to a charity

Do something! Even if something small! You do not have to give money! Give a few moments every so often. A pro-life organization used to send me return address labels. I would use the return address labels on all of my mail. Do you realize how many people see your mail as the mail gets processed?

Give someone a compliment

I have not had a man in my life in over 10 years. Around here, men are either gay or married. I have recenlly met a man new to the area. I ran into him a few days agp. I was not wearing any makeup! He gave me a hug and old me that I am beautiful without makeup. Felt good!

Give away clothing and books that are collecting dust

There is a box at my church for clothing to be given away. Next week, I am even going shopping for some clothing for this box. Then, I have some from my closet.

Do not gossip

There have been people I had to listen to over the years who did nothing but gossip. I learned to watch what to say around such people or let what I have said be spread throughtout the universe.

Give a thank you

I am always telling my landlord “thank you”. For example, last weekend, our bathroom plumbing got stuck. We roommates could not fix it. Instead of having maintenance come out on a weekend, our landlord fixed the plumbing himself.

That’s it! Now did that cost much?

The holiday season is coming up and you know what that means… the Season and Spirit of Giving.

Happy Thanksgiving and Merry Christmas a little early!

I love this post. It gives ideas how to be extra kind and helpful to other people. We have a house helper and she brings her 8 year old daughter. She still can't read. I work as a tutor and I tutor her for free. I just want to help her not asking for any money

Be benevolent.
Fill the world with love, peace and harmony.
Devote yourself to the service of mankind.
That's what all religions teach.
God resides in us. We are a part of God.
Respect every human-being but never support injustice.
That is all.

What is your most favorite way to serve others? If you could choose to list one way?

My all time favorite hobby is what I call "angel duty". It has been my ongoing experience for as far back as I can recall. I love to find myself at just the right place and time to help a stranger in some kind of emergency. I stop and do whatever is needed to help them go on but also enjoy disappearing as fast as I can to leave them wondering where that came from. There have been times when it was only a few minutes to other times that took me many hours. A few of them were life saving events.

I never ask for nor accept any financial compensation. I don't need drugs or alcohol to get high. Nothing else gives me the same feeling of floating in sheer bliss after these events. It is getting harder to do with age related physical limitations these days but I still watch for the opportunity every chance I get.

I highly recommend performing "Angel Duty". It gives you a kick you just can't get any other way.

Good for you and well done for helping others. How do you come across these opportunities to help others? Is it just a matter of being alert to them or do you actively got out looking for people to help?

I just pay attention to my surroundings. In traffic, I just watch as I come to a stop to make sure to leave an opening at driveways. On my walks, I just watch as I walk by. On a recent walk, I spotted a couple moving in to a new home. The husband and wife were struggling with a washing machine so I stopped to give a hand. I saw a truck pull off to the side of the road and stopped to offer help. He needed to cross the highway to pick up road equipment so I put on my safety vest and took out my bright lights to direct traffic. I spotted a guy with a motorcycle on the side of the road. Stopped to find his drive chain had snapped. Loaded his bike in my truck and drove him more than 200 miles to the nearest repair shop. Arrived as they were closing, but they got a new chain installed so he could get back rolling. Some are little things, some take hours. Hundreds more similar incidents just by being observant. You don't need to dig to find them. Just keep your eyes open.

That really is super @OldGuy well done to you, those actions would be most helpful to those on the receiving end. Helping a couple lift their washing machine might only take a few minutes, but it could take a lot of stress out of the situation for them and make their memory of moving into their new home that much more pleasurable.

Driving a stranger 200 miles to a repair shop is a big commitment, one most people would not take on. Well done, I'm sure your actions help a lot of people on a practical level and also restore their belief in human nature.

I agree with you @Fergal!

Santa, Mrs. Santa and all of the reindeer are on Angel Duty for me every Christmas. With working on WeekendNotes as a Senior Reviewer, I go through tons of office supplies. Every Christmas, sure as can be, I receive a year's worth of office supplies!

You have a very clear point. Helping others doesn't have to be religious. It's doing the right thing with a pure heart. If you give support regardless, you get that feeling of being loved and held in good esteem. People respect and value you. That's the essence of humanity. That's why service remains so powerful in everyone's life. It builds bonds and trust and makes the community grow strong and positive vibes remain stable.

It's true that gossipers can be very annoying because everything you say spreads out of control. That's when you learn to be careful with your speech and filter the information you share. It's often better to listen quietly and avoid giving out your personal details. This helps you protect your peace and prevent unnecessary drama.

My feelings are hurt.

A friend from the cafe always sends home food for myself.

Last week, I gave him homemade bread pizza and he gave the bread pizza to another person.

Then, today, I prepared a special chicken salad wrap but he did not want the wrap.

What am I doing wrong?

That's so annoying! I mean, you spent your time lovingly preparing a homemade bread pizza, and then he takes it and gives it to someone else? It feels like he underestimated your efforts or didn't care about the gift you gave him.

Ensuring that you do the right thing and you put others first is also a way to serve others.

Learning to cook and bake on your own is a great confidence booster that will make you a master in the kitchen without relying on anyone. If you start with simple recipes, you will quickly understand the secrets of ingredients and oven temperatures.

My roommate is never home, leaving myself on her "pet cat" duty.

She calls myself his "nanny".
