Dutch Court Dissolves AI Marriage

Postby germainebull » 06 Feb 2026, 14:40

A court in the Netherlands has nullified a marriage after deciding that vows created by AI were not legally valid. The couple believed they had officially wed at Zoella in April 2025, but the ceremony turned out to be more of a game than a lawful union. Their friend, who relied on ChatGPT to draft the vows, left out the essential legal components required by the government.

This incident highlights that technology alone cannot replace human oversight in legal matters. Understanding the legal framework of marriage is crucial, because failing to meet the requirements can leave couples unexpectedly unmarried and facing disappointment in their personal lives.

Was the marriage ceremony overseen by someone certified and qualified to do so?

Of course, while AI might gather pointers here and there, or other AI systems, how can they vouch for completing legal documents and validating what has been duly filled or certified and what has not been.

I disagree.
Your marriage. Your vows.
The vows were AI-generated? So what!
If the vows didn't incorporate criminal acts … Your marriage. Your vows.

I have seen this case attract a lot of discussion. The Dutch court ruled that AI-generated vows have no legal force because marriage requires a personal and voluntary agreement from the parties themselves. From a legal perspective, vows are a sign of personal consent and not a written document produced by a program. Even if one sees AI-generated vows as having emotional meaning, the law still requires evidence of direct agreement between the spouses.

So your argument shows the social and personal side—that marriage is about two people and vows represent their feelings. But the legal side emphasizes the validity of personal consent, not machine-written text. This is why cases like this are sparking a broader debate about the role of AI in human life.

And parties can't personally and voluntarily agree to use AI-generated vows?

Dutch courts want people to abide by existing marital laws.
