The primary purpose of a hashtag is to make your tweets be on the lists that will easily be visible. If you are tweeting about trending topics and you use the trending hashtag, your tweets will be line up to the tweets about that trending hashtag. Your tweets are now one of the reasons why the hashtag is trending.
