How to Answer: What is your Salary Expectations?

Postby grecy0905 » 15 Mar 2017, 22:05

In every job interview, the HR Personnel or even Managers are asking what are your salary expectations. Of course, when you are on a job hunting, whether online or offline, you always consider not only that is related to your experience, skills, and course, but you also look jobs that match your salary expectations. You regularly check if that kind of job will able to earn you money more than you are earning from your previous job. If you have experienced, you tend to want it more. Therefore, you need a salary range. What is your Salary Expectations?

Take note of the Salary Range Written on the Job Posting and Analyze Your Own Salary Range

When you are on a job hunting, better take note of the salary ranges of the company you are applying. You keep notes and better be prepared to answer this type of question. This is a straightforward question that you need to answer in a way that you are not setting yourself high or low. If you know the range is low and you have experience about the job, you can set it higher. Prepare a reason for sometimes they are asking for it. However, sometimes you want the job because you prefer additional experience. You can meet the range as it is. Unfortunately, some hiring managers will set it lower that the range because it depends on the certain budget. Prepare your reason why you need to set your own salary expectations based on your experience in the job.

The Question is, Do you want to answer it?

The real question is, do you want to answer it? Some are not answering a question like this because they think it might look them very confident with their experience, but what is the problem with that if you know your capability based on your experience. Other ways to answer this is to tell that your salary expectations are based on your qualifications and experience. You might want to ask the interviewer instead of what are the salary ranges, even if know already. This is a different case if you have no idea with the salary ranges they are offering so it is good to ask them and decide from there. Prepare to answer it because sometimes this is how they measure your confidence and trust in yourself. They would like to know the exact amount as you might not know they can able to pay you that amount monthly if you are the right candidate for the job.

No Idea of Salary Expectations, You Need To Do A Research

When you know your past salary from your previous job is unfair because it is too low, you need to research what are the market is saying for specific job roles. If you don’t have any idea at all since it is your first job, then you really need to research. There are sites like Indeed.com that gives you an idea about salary ranges for a different position. Some company has its budget salary for a new employee but sometimes it is not correlated to your experience and qualifications. Researching will give you a heads up and will surely help you decide what salary you expect to have.

These are really good tips pointed out here. Myself because I have no degree in anything I actually have never been asked before what my salary expectation was... I just was told during the interview the weekly hours and that in most cases the job was minimum wage. Even though I have yet to experience this I feel like I learned some good valuable information with this one. Thanks

But you will be asked to have a salary range, that is why you need to evaluate your experiences, your last salary at your previous company and the salary range/budget of future employer.

Currently, I am not even making 20 percent of my expected salary. I am working full time but my salary can only support me for the basic needs. I cannot make a saving. Your tips sound impressive.

The article you provided has some good tips for us to consider. One appropriate answer to give is it would be better to wait until a job offer is extended to me. Often times, depending on the progress made through the interviewing process, bringing up salary is too early. This is especially true of the job seeker but it is possible to provide this to the interviewer. If they push and prod for an answer then the bottom line is you want to be compensated based on your experience, accomplishments, certifications, and skills. You want to be paid at or above market rate. You must know your worth and you must have an idea of the salary range. As the article suggested, doing your research is key. Another source for information is the government. They have all kinds of data and statistics on jobs and salaries. Confidence is also key while talking about salary.

Researching for the range salary for the position is a must, not only on job hunting online. It makes you a person who are really interested to know the position and you could be a good candidate for doing that.

Very useful tips. This question is normally challenging if one does not have an idea of the salary range they can get. Thanks for sharing.
