If you have a habit that limits yourself to achieve success, this might help you. It could be anything from a late night watching Korean series that leads you to sleep at 3 in the morning and waking up at 6 am to go to your work, from the habit of getting home late because of window shopping or night outs with friends. Those habits that make your body tired at the early morning when you should be alert and focus on what you need to do should stop.
Everyone could relate to this. Everyone has the habit that instead of helping them, making it hard to discipline themselves more. There are two words that could help us to dramatically resists the temptation of doing our bad habits. This research was done by Dr. Vanessa Patrick, a Professor in Marketing in Houston Texas, and done her work about the Power of Self-Talk in the Journal of Consumer Research.
Based on the Study, when I person said “I don’t watch late night Korean dramas”, “I don’t eat chocolate” “I don’t hang out with friends in the mall during weekdays” compared to “I can’t watch late night Korean dramas” “I can’t eat chocolate” and “I can’t hang out with my friends in the mall during weekdays” there is a possibility that “ I don’t” could happen compared to “I can’t”. When it comes to decision-making, “I don’t” is nearly three times effective than “I can’t” when the answer is No, and 8 times effective that saying “I can’t”. I don’t and I can’t make gigantic differences when it comes to decision making and here’s why.
I don’t
I don’t make us in control of what we want to do with our life. The choice is ours and we determine that we don’t do certain things. It is like a period. If you said you don’t, it means you are not doing it, period.
I can’t
I can’t literally mean we just can’t do it. We just can’t do it today, but we can do it tomorrow. Whenever we say we can’t, there is a possibility that we can. We can even move mountains because there will be days that we can really do it and make things possible for us. There is always an option when we say we can’t. It makes us weak because it leads us in a position when we have to choose one and we do it.
Tough Decision Making
When it comes to decision making, we can do a tough declaration that could change everything. We can start saying to ourselves that we don’t eat sweet foods, we don’t mingle with other people’s lives, we don’t sleep late, we don’t go to work late, we don’t allow us to fail, I don’t spend my hard earned money on some things that don’t matter and anything about our life that we need to lessen and eliminate. When you need to resists to eliminate a bad habit, I don’t is stronger than I can’t, so start using that word.
